Historian - History Explorer for Jira is a Jira Cloud app that helps you to see, list, sort, and filter all the changes in work item histories. It provides a clear and structured way to explore the complete change history of your issues, going beyond Jira's native history view. You can switch between work item–based and field-based views, collapse or expand details for readability, and focus on the specific fields that matter to you. This makes it easy to track every update in a simple, audit-friendly layout.
History Explorer is designed specifically to give you full visibility into what changed, when, and by whom.
The Work Item History Report is the main reporting screen in Historian. You select the issues you want to investigate using a JQL query, choose the fields you want to track, and then explore the full history of those issues in a structured table. (See Work Item History Report)
Historian offers two ways to view history data. The Work Item-Based View groups all changes under each issue, making it easy to follow a single issue's timeline. The Field-Based View splits each change into its own row, making it ideal for analyzing a specific field across many issues. (See Work Item Based View and Field Based View)
You can filter the history log by date range, by the user who made the change, or by specific field values. Multiple filters across different columns combine with AND logic, giving you precise control over what you see. (See Filter)
History data can be exported to XLSX or CSV formats for use in external tools or audit reports. Export access can be restricted by Jira administrators. (See Export)
The Compare Dates feature allows you to place two snapshots of a single issue side by side and see exactly what changed between those two points in time. You can navigate between change events using arrows and filter the view to show only modified fields. (See Compare Dates)
The Historic Query report lets you reconstruct what your Jira project looked like at any point in the past. Enter a JQL query and a target date, and Historian will show you the state of those issues as they were on that date. (See Historic Query)
The Work Item View Tab brings Historian directly into the Jira issue view. You can access the full field-based history of any issue without leaving the issue screen, from the Activity section of any work item. (See Work Item View Tab)
Historian Assistant is an AI-powered assistant built into the app, powered by Atlassian Rovo. You can ask it questions in plain language and it will guide you to the right feature or configuration within Historian. (See Historian AI Assistant)
Jira administrators can control who has access to Historian and who can export data through the Permissions configuration screen. (See Permissions)
